Dominick's NSP Program Moving Forward (1st Closing!)

On Thursday, June 25th, Alberto Fret and his wife, Jennifer Vera, became the first new homeowners assisted by Larry Dominick's Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Mr. Fret purchased a foreclosed property for $70,000.00 and received $14,000.00 in Down Payment Assistance, and will also receive $21,000.00 in Rehabilitation Assistance. This assistance is in the form of a 0% interest, deferred payment loan, which will be forgiven if he lives in the property for 10 years. A grant of $30,000.00 is also being awarded to address Lead-Based Paint hazards in the property. Renovation is expected to begin in the next week

Mr. Fret is extremely grateful for the financial assistance, and is looking forward to calling Cicero his families' home. . Fret, a native of Puerto Rico, has more reasons to be happy, the day before closing, he and his wife celebrated the birth of their first child, daughter Jeniahliz Fret! The "American Dream" is becoming a reality for this young professional couple.

Emilio "Emo" Cundari, Executive Director for Community Development said this program is really in full swing. "We (the Town) currently have more applicants than we have funds, and had to start a waiting list". Emo also explained that President Dominick has instructed the Department of Community Development to "better position ourselves to obtain NSP2 funds by forming a consortium with other regional communities". If awarded NSP2 funds, the Town looks to receive an additional $2 million.

Tom Tomschin, NSP Program Manager said it was fate that Alberto would be the first recipient of Cicero's NSP funds. "We've been working with him for several months, had a few bumps along the way, but were finally able to secure a closing date. No one would have known it would be a day after they would have their daughter! I am so happy for them, they are truly wonderful people, and will be an asset to our community. Special thanks also needs to go out to Joe Castillo, their Realtor. He really worked to get this deal done. Working with REO Brokers can be difficult, but Castillo proved up for the challenge."

Other exciting NSP Developments on the horizon include the removal of blighted structures, to be replaced with new-construction housing, as well as the renovation of blighted multi-unit buildings, to be completely rehabbed and rented to people with disabilities. For more information regarding the Town's NSP Program, please contact Ruperto Deloera at 708-656-8223 ext. 15.
