Department of Animal Welfare, Care & Control

The Department of Animal Welfare, Care & Control cares for all the animals in the Town of Cicero.

Animal Registry

All dogs and cats must be registered with the Town of Cicero. You may do so by bringing a copy of your pet's rabies certificate to the Town Collector's Office. Registry cost is $5 if the animal is spayed/neutered and $10 if the animal is not. The number of allowed pets in one household is three.

Cicero Shelter/Cicero Waggin' Tails Shelter

At our shelter, all animals are kept safe and comfortable. They each are given their own large caged in run area with food, water, treats, blankets and/or pillows and toys. The dogs are allowed to spend time outside in our newly built runs at least three times a day for 10-20 minutes (with supervision) . If we feel that a sick animal has come into our facility, we make sure to avoid any contact with other animals that we have in our care. If the animal was injured while on the street, we immediately get the animal veterinarian care.

Lost Pets

Residents with the misfortune of losing their pet may contact us to assist them in their effort in finding their pet and bringing it home safely.

If the animal is wearing a collar with identification or has a microchip, we will notify the owner immediately. Citizens have 7 days to claim their pet. If you do not pick up your pet within the 7 days, it then becomes property of the Town of Cicero. The seven day term includes weekends and holidays.

If a pet comes into our facility and has no identification at all and an owner does not contact us, we are not required to keep the animal for any length of time. Since we always hope the owner will come forward, the pets with no identification we will be held for 4 days, including weekends and holidays, as a courtesy to pet owners. We want nothing more than to reunite these animals with their families.
Pets not claimed within the 4 or 7 day period will then be prepared to be put up for adoption at the Cicero Waggin' Tails Shelter. We also work with many non kill shelters. We do not believe in euthanizing any pet unless it is absolutely necessary. Animals only in severe pain and that are near death will be put down.

Owner Give-up

If a Cicero resident has a pet that they can no longer care for, they can contact us and bring the pet to our shelter where they can sign the pet over to us and we will then prepare the pet to be adopted into a loving home. There is a fee of $25 for this service.

Wildlife Trapping

The Department of Animal Welfare, Care & Control has obtained a license from the Department of Agriculture to be able to trap wildlife. This includes opossums, raccoons and feral cats that try to make your backyard or porch their home. With the residents consent, we will leave a humane trap on your property. Once the animal is trapped, the resident can contact us to schedule a pick up of the animal. There is no fee for this service.
