$2 million Bond for Five Kidnapping Suspects
7/23/2010 2:00:00 PM

A Cook County Court Judge has set a $2 million bond for each of five suspects involved in the kidnapping of Zita Paniagua, 45, the owner of Salon Impresiones in Cicero, 4902 W. Cermak Road.

Charged in the kidnapping are Blanca Solis, 39 and her husband Marco Cardenas, 35, both of 3968 S. Emerson, Schiller Park, and three accused accomplices from Chicago, Gerardo Moreno, 39, of 5147 S. Homan, Victor Mendoza, 34, of 4638 S. Mozart, and Rocoberto Lopez, 26, of 4046 S. Montgomery.

Paniangua was kidnapped after she closed her Salon at 9:43 pm on Wednesday July 14. The kidnappers had called her husband demanding a $200,000 ransom and warning him not to call police, but he immediately informed police saving her life.

Cicero police immediately responded to the call and brought in the FBI. The FBI provided resources including the ransom amount and high-tech equipment including helicopters and an airplane that tracked the husband who was led to several locations before making contact with one of the suspects. When the money changed hands, FBI surveillance and Cicero police followed the suspect to one of the homes where they found all five suspects and freed Paniangua on Thursday afternoon.

"The Town of Cicero has one of the best and most effective police departments in the Midwest. Their record of fighting crime is very impressive, and we are all proud of their work in this case and many other cases," said Town President Larry Dominick.

Cicero Police Chief Lori Lelis said, "I am very proud of the persistence of the detectives and cooperation and support they received from the FBI. Together, they worked countless hours on this. They never dropped this. They had the victim's family in protective custody staying with them at the police station. We contacted the Federal Authorities and we worked together hand in hand. The federal authorities went in to this full steam without hesitation."

Police involved include Sgt. Greg Dybas, Detectives E. Acevez, Paul Laslie, Miguel Jimenez, Chris Wojtowicz, M. Ramirez, and Detective Sgt. Bernie Harrison.

All five suspects face felony aggravated kidnapping charges.
